Eleonora Sammarchi, Postdoctoral Researcher 2020-2024

From March 2020 to September 2024. I was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Chair of History and Philosophy of Mathematical Sciences, Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (GESS), ETH-Zürich. My research focuses on the history of algebra with a specific focus on Arabic and Latin sources. The title of my postdoctoral project was “A history of algebraic expressions before the introduction of the term 'polynomial'”. Besides the already published papers, the results of my project will be published in a monograph.

General: History and philosophy of science; Global history, Intellectual history; Science and Mediterranean societies

Specific: History of algebra and arithmetic (9th-17th c.); Arabic and Latin mathematics; Al-Zanjānī’s life and scientific production


Current position
Since Oct. 2024 I am a SNSF Assistant Professor and P.I. of the SNSF Starting Grant Project
“Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean Mathematics (MediMath)”.
I am also Associate Member (Chercheuse associée) of Laboratoire SPHere (UMR 7219), Université Paris Cité.
